KENTA Wins The NJPW Strong Openweight Championship; Eddie Kingston Sends Message

Bullet Club member KENTA has regained his NJPW Strong Openweight Championship after defeating former Bullet Club member Hikuleo at Sunday night's NJPW Resurgence event. Before losing the title, Hikuleo had defeated KENTA earlier this month at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 2023 to become the then-new champion.

After KENTA won the title, AEW-ROH star Eddie Kingston appeared on screen and told him that he was "coming" for the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship once he returns from injury. Kingston is currently dealing with a hernia injury and underwent surgery on May 9.

Tonight's win marks KENTA's second reign as the NJPW Strong Openweight title reign. His first title reign began earlier this year in February after he defeated Fred Rosser at NJPW Battle in the Valley 2023 and ended when Hikuleo won it from him earlier this month at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku. Other NJPW titles that KENTA has held include the IWGP United States Championship and the NEVER Openweight Championship.

Sunday night's event took place in Long Beach, California at the Walter Pyramid, and the main event will crown the first-ever NJPW Strong Women's Champions. There will also be a #1 contenders tournament match to decide who Kenny Omega will defend his IWGP United States Championship against. The winner of tonight's match has to face Lance Archer at Dominion and the winner of that match will then go on to face Omega. 

One of Omega's last title defenses was in March, where he successfully defended the championship against Jeff Cobb on the March 29 episode of "AEW Dynamite."
